The first night of the second matchday of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League ended on Tuesday, with nine results confirmed on the competition's official page. Three teams have collected six points from two games and remain unbeaten: FC Barcelona, Sporting CP and Arsenal. The main highlight was Barcelona's comeback at Galatasaray in Istanbul, with Lamine Yamal providing two assists in the second half, and the Catalan side taking sole command of the league phase.
Galatasaray 1-4 FC Barcelona: Aleksei Batrakov opened the scoring at the 28-minute mark, taking advantage of a deflection off João Cancelo after a run by Rafael Leão. In the 34th minute, Baris Alper Yılmaz headed home a corner, but the goal was disallowed by VAR for offside. The equaliser came in the 43rd minute, when the Portuguese full-back scored from distance following a pass from Dani Olmo. In the second half, Fermín López headed at the 50-minute mark to overturn the result, from a cross by Lamine Yamal. Three minutes later, Yamal broke through the marking of Eren Elmalı and played it to Anthony Gordon, who scored his first goal as a Blaugrana in the Champions. At the 65-minute mark, newly-signed Karim Adeyemi sealed the comeback. Barcelona now have six points, while Galatasaray sit on zero, in 34th place out of a 36-team table. The Catalans' next game is at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday 20 October at 8pm BST.
Arsenal 3-0 Lille: three goals in the last seven minutes of the second half secured Arsenal's second win in the competition. Jurriën Timber opened the scoring at 64, Eberechi Eze took advantage of a Bukayo Saka cross at 67, and Saka himself scored the third at 71. With this campaign, Arsenal have collected six points and have the best goal difference in the league phase.
Atlético de Madrid 2-0 Manchester United: Atlético took the win with a goal from Pablo Barrios in the first minute of the game, and Ademola Lookman, who came on in the second half, sealed it after Leny Yoro was sent off. Manchester United remain without points in the Champions.
Inter 3-4 Club Brugge: attacker Nicolò Tresoldi scored three goals (hat-trick) to take Club Brugge to an away win at San Siro. The Belgian side took the lead, and the Brazilian Lautaro Martínez scored two goals for Inter in the second half, but it wasn't enough to equalise. Inter remain without points in the competition.
Viking 3-3 Bayern München: Harry Kane extended his run of consecutive Champions goals to nine games, converting a penalty and equalising with a header, but Bayern could only manage one point away from home. Midfielder Michael Olise was sent off in the second half, and Herman Haugen scored Viking's goal late in the match, giving the Norwegian club their first point in Champions League history.
Other results from the night: Sporting CP beat Lens 2-0 away from home, with Luis Suárez becoming the club's all-time top scorer in the Champions; Villarreal beat Napoli 3-1, ending a run of 12 games without a win in the competition; Leipzig beat PSV 1-0; and Sabah, making their debut in the competition, beat Slavia Prague 2-0 in Baku.
Wednesday still had nine games left to be played: Como v Feyenoord, LASK v Liverpool, Roma v Real Madrid, Aston Villa v Fenerbahçe, Shakhtar Donetsk v AEK Athens, Bodø/Glimt v Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City v Paris Saint-Germain, Real Betis v Porto, and Slovan Bratislava v Stuttgart. All games kicked off at 9pm CET, except Como v Feyenoord and LASK v Liverpool, which began at 6:45pm. The official UEFA page recommends checking the updated schedule before each match.
The Champions league phase ends on 27 January 2027, with 36 teams competing in a single table. The top 23 advance to the knockout phase, and teams ranked 19th to 24th will play a single-elimination replay against the 8th-placed teams in the UEFA Europa League.
A 36-team table only makes sense when each matchday shows who is keeping pace and who is starting to fall behind.
